Bio

As an Adventure Educator and a Licensed Maine Guide Randy Smith has spent more than 25 years guiding people in  the wilderness from Maine to Alaska. With an extensive list of guided trips from beginner-friendly Class I to more experienced Class V+ whitewater expeditions, Randy also has a lifetime of hiking and backpacking experience in remote wilderness areas. With guiding experience on every major canoe route in his home state of Maine, a successful thru hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2020, and guided hikes in New Hampshire's White Mountains, Randy has also paddled canoes and rafts on world class rivers such as the Gauley River (WV), the Colorado River (UT), Grand Canyon (AZ), Green River (UT), Yampa River (CO) and the Primrose River in the Yukon Territory. 

 

Randy lives in Carmel Me. (born in Bangor Me.) where he grew up exploring the woods on his family’s land. He is an adventure educator by profession and has been a professional licensed Maine guide for 25 years. Today Randy lives at named Rocky Hill Permaculture Farm, a restoration initiative for the same land where he grew up as a child. Randy is designing life through permaculture principles and ethics, a lifetime of passion for the outdoors, and core values of Sustainability. Adventure. Education. Having led adventure trips for people of all ages from all walks of life his core values are the foundation for Maine Guide Company's wilderness trips and custom chartered itineraries for all who want to explore the wilderness. 

In addition to holding a Wilderness First Responder Certification for 20 years, Maine Whitewater Guide License (since 1996), and Maine Recreation Guide License (since 2004), Randy's qualifications include his training in river and high angle rescue, experience in risk management and itinerary planning, teambuilding, and a MA in Adventure Education and Outdoor Therapies.

 

When Randy isn't leading trips, planting, or working with clients, you can find him enjoying the garden or his own adventures, such as hiking, or solo paddling native canoe routes.
