Big Moose Mountain (Full day. Moderate)

Nestled high in the Moosehead lake region, Big Moose Mountain (4.5 miles) rises 2000 feet over Maine's largest body of water. Surrounded by beauty, this mountain is no exception. Big Moose mountain provides views that span across the state of Maine, from the rugged Bigelow range, to the state’s highest peak, Mt. Katahdin. The mountain also has a rich history as well. It is the home of the nation’s first fire tower, erected in 1905. Since then much has changed. A major Ski resort has been built, though in the last few years has seen minimal use due to poor conditions and heavy competition from other destination resorts such as Sugarloaf and Saddleback. However the resort’s slogan, “Ski the view,” makes perfect sense because the vistas are truly breathtaking. From the top of the summit several mountains can be seen. Across Lily Bay, Baker Mountain rises 3,520 feet, with its neighbors Lily Bay Mountain and Number Four Mountain to the left. Further up the lake, the Spencer mountains emerge east of Kineo Mountain. To the west the four sharp peaks of the Bigelow range dominate the horizon, with Sugarloaf Mountain behind.

Great pond mountain (Half day. Easy)

With open ledges near its summit that offer great views, Great Pond Mountain is a popular hiking location in the 4,300-acre Great Pond Mountain Wildlands. Topping off at 1,020 feet above sea level, it’s the tallest mountain in the area, but compared a lot of other Maine mountains, it’s modest in size and fairly easy to climb. Hiking to the summit and back is about 2.5 miles. The trail is well built, marked and maintained. Expect gradual but steady climbing, first through the forest, then over more open terrain with bare bedrock and clumps of lichen and low-lying plants. The trail forms a loop at the top of the mountain, and a side trail travels out to some ledges.

Mosquito Mt. Full Day (Moderate)

Don’t let the mountain name discourage you from enjoying this very hike, while the early season it can be rather buggy, it is a great hike in the summer and fall. This gem of a hike is located in The Forks, Maine.

Mosquito Mountain is a quick hike, it is considered a bit easy on the scale of hikes because of its short distance it is fairly technical at certain parts. The overlook casts a perfect view of Lake Moxie and to the north, a view of Indian Pond, which provides the water for Kennebec River. During late July – early September, keep your eyes open for some wild blueberry bushes! They make for a great snack on the peak of the mountain.

Gulf Hagas Gorge (Full Day, Moderate to Difficult)

The “Grand Canyon of the East,” Gulf Hagas is a gorge carved by the west branch of the Pleasant River as it drops 500 feet over the course of three miles. The resulting waterfalls are best explored along a rim trail over rugged terrain (think rocks and tree roots) and elevation changes. The nine-mile round-trip trek (there are shorter versions) is worth every ounce of sweat, as you’re rewarded with spectacular views of the rivers and falls, which make great swimming holes to cool off in (not to mention fishing pools).

Mount Kineo (Full Day, Moderate)

Mt. Kineo rises dramatically several hundred feet out of Moosehead Lake, Maine’s largest. Connected by a narrow road to the mainland, the mountain is nevertheless only accessible by water (a public boat launch in Rockwood starts you on your journey). From there, follow the shoreline path, an old carriage road, for almost a mile past private property onto public land. There are several easy hikes depending on the amount of time you have, although the most strenuous, Indian Trail 00 affords the best views. Atop is a converted fire tower affording views of the stunning lake.

Day Hikers FAQ

It is important that you wear comfortable trail shoes (sneakers and running shoes are great; you do not have to wear boots). You should bring a rain coat and extra layers, one liter of water( per person) for half day hikes and two liters of water per person for full day hikes. You should bring a day pack if you have one and also you must pack any personal medications that you may need such as an inhaler or epi-pen.
